Urchin – the company name which just a few might recall today, but everyone involved in marketing uses what they invent very often. Google acquired them in 2005 and built the product we know as Google Analytics.

UTM is for Urchin tracking module. Another common term that came from Urchin.

I had the opportunity to use various versions of Urchin and must say that it was the perfect software for those times. By contrast, with other solutions from those times, such as Webalizer, Urchin was a sky rocket one. Both did the same work - analyse web server logs and build human-friendly reports, but Urchin was far, far better by UI/UX and definitely better with features.

Google Analytics has become a monster nowadays – very complex software installed for free on 2/3 of the sites on the web. Which eventually gave rise to privacy requests, cookie consent and other annoying things.

Anyway, the software Urchin built and, later, with the power of Google, has changed the lives of millions of people. But nobody knows the names behind such a story. History just wiped it out, which is not fair, but it's a part of history.
